The fabulous state of Maryland sits in the Mid Atlantic area of America and is well known for its maritime past and current science research and development centers. It’s the ninth smallest state in area, but the 19th largest in population as it’s home to about six million people. It became the seventh state admitted to the union when it joined in 1788. The state capital is Annapolis, and the biggest city is Baltimore. Other popular centers include Ocean City, Columbia, Silver Spring, Rockville, Landover, Salisbury, Chesapeake City, Bowie, Hagerstown, and Frederick. Most of Maryland’s’ residents live around the area close to Washington D.C.

The landscape of Maryland is pretty varied as it consists of marshland, sandy dunes, beaches, rolling hills, mountains, forests, ponds, rivers, and pine groves. The Atlantic Ocean also borders part of the state’s east coast. The weather can be pretty varied, depending on the area. But the winters aren’t really too cold while the summer’s are nice and warm.

Driving into and around Maryland shouldn’t cause you any problems as the highway system and the regional roads are all up to par. If you’d like to fly into the state, the largest international airport is Baltimore-Washington. Salisbury and Hagerstown also have commercial airports for domestic flights. You might also want to fly into Washington, D.C. as Ronald Reagan, and Dulles Airport are both close by. You can catch Amtrak trains in Baltimore, Aberdeen, New Carrollton, Cumberland, and Rockville. There are also some regional services as well as light rail and subway services in Baltimore. There are several waterways and the port of Baltimore is pretty busy, but mainly used for shipping.

Thousands of visitors head to Maryland to take advantage of the seashores as they love to partake in the water sports and recreation they offer. Annapolis is especially popular as it’s known as the sailing capital of the U.S. and thousands of people also head over to Ocean City in the summers as it’s a wonderful resort town. Most visitors cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as it links the state’s western and eastern shores when heading to Ocean City.

The state’s maritime history can be witnessed throughout as there are quite a few maritime museums in different towns and cities. One of the best is the Baltimore Maritime Museum. Baltimore is actually a pretty exciting and vibrant city and that’s where most of the nightlife takes place. If you’re a Civil War buff, a good place to look up is the National Museum of Civil War Medicine which is located in Frederick.
The flora and fauna’s varied and interesting and that’s good news for nature lovers as there’s plenty of wilderness to explore. If you want to take in some sporting events, you can check out Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles along with the Baltimore Ravens football team of the NFL. There are also several minor-league pro franchises in action and many fans head to Washington to catch the NHL and NBA teams in action.

There are plenty of places to stay throughout the state from budget motels to top-of-the-line hotels. This means you’ll be able to find a suitable place for whatever type of budget you’re on. Restaurants are also pretty diverse as you’ll be able to find local dishes along with international cuisine. You can get some great seafood there, such as crabs, oysters, and clams. It’s also fun trying to catch your own.
